Settlement, shielings and landscape This project studies the use of the landscape at a detailed level, the Backa homestead in northern Värmland, Sweden. A point of departure is the dialogic relation between human activity and landscape, and considering the forest primarily as a cultural landscape. The study focuses on settlement and agrarian outland use, e.g. shielings and mires for haymaking, and their dependance on one another. The project is interdisciplinary, with the participation of Forest history, Historical geography, Archaeology and Medieval archaeology.
